Homemade Fried Green Tomatoes with Pimento Cheese

Fried Green Tomato

As any good southerner could attest, a perfectly fried green tomato topped with pimento cheese is a flawless addition to any meal. The secret to these homemade tomaters is self-rising cornmeal and an even thick cut slice! I added a bit of tabasco to these, to give them a kick, but feel free to leave that out, or substitute with a bit extra of the creole seasoning.

For this appetizer I cheated a bit and used a friends already prepared pimento cheese! It was homemade, just not by me! Looks like I have an idea for one of my next recipes to try out!

IngredientsIngredients

  • 3 medium, firm green tomatoes
  • coarse seal salt Salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp Creole seasoning
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons tabasco
  • 1/3 cup self-rising cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup panko crumbs
  • 1/4 pure vegetable oil

Prepare

  1. IMG_8292Cut unpeeled tomatoes into 1/2 inch slices. Sprinkle slices with sea salt.
  2. While tomatoes sit, create three separate dipping bowls. 1) flour and creole seasoning 2) buttermilk, tabasco & egg, and 2) panko and cornmeal.
  3. Beat the egg mixture together.
  4. Heat the oil in a skillet, or in my case at home fry daddy, on medium heat.
  5. Dip tomato slices in the flour-seasoning mix, then buttermilk-egg mixture, then the cornmeal-bread crumb mix.
  6. In the skillet or fry daddy, fry coated tomato slices in batches, for 3-5 minutes on each side or until brown.
  7. Set the cooked tomatoes on paper towels to drain. IMG_8294
  8. Add your favorite toppings, in this case pimento cheese and enjoy!
